Volkswagen Jetta Delivers Compact Style
Among compact sedans, the Volkswagen Jetta stands out with its styling and features. There are five trim levels to choose from, each offering an impressive level of customization. Thanks to Car-Net App-Connect, your smartphone is paired to the Jetta’s infotainment system in no time, giving you access to your favorite features right through the touchscreen. Listen to your favorite songs from your phone or SiriusXM Satellite Radio on the available Fender Premium Audio System.
To further enhance your driving experience, the Jetta has VW Car-Net Guide & Inform and Car-Net Security & Service. These technologies will help you stay safe, as will the rearview camera system, Blind Spot Monitor, Park Assist, Rear Traffic Alert, Front Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control, all of which are standard or available on the Volkswagen Jetta. With those protective features, you can focus on your driving experience, which should be truly pleasant thanks to the power tilting and sliding moonroof, and relaxing seats.
Check Out the Updates for the 2017 VW Jetta
Like many Volkswagen models for this year, the 2017 VW Jetta has seen its trim levels streamlined. Instead of having seven models to select from, there are five. This streamlined lineup allows VW to include more features on the Jetta for a lower price and makes it easier to choose your preference.
Both the diesel and the Jetta Hybrid are temporarily gone. The base S now uses a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, 5-speed automatic, and has newly standard features that include a backup camera, LED running lights, and 16-inch steel wheels. The SE trim builds on this with a sunroof, the Car-Net system, leatherette upholstery, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitor.
Thanks to the trim reshuffling, the 2017 Jetta SEL now uses the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine and a 6-speed automatic. Its newly standard features include power for the driver’s seat, forward collision warning, autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, and automatic climate control. You can also special order a SEL Premium for this model year with adaptive bi-xenon headlights. While the 2016 GLI offered an SE or SEL, the 2017 version only has the SE with its 6-speed manual and 2-liter turbo. The newly standard features include blind spot monitoring, parking assist, navigation, and a power driver’s seat.
How the Volkswagen Jetta Came to Be
Volkswagen showed off the Jetta during the 1979 Frankfurt Auto Show, hitting showrooms as a 1980 model. It was first available in two trims and as a four-door sedan or a two-door coupe. It always used a 5-speed manual and a 74-horsepower 1.6-liter engine with an optional 50-horsepower diesel.
This original Jetta shared many underpinnings with the Golf although it was 15 inches longer and had a more polished feel including upgraded materials. The second generation arrived in 1985 in North America with smoother edges, an angled hood, and some other stylistic adjustments. The Jetta had also grown for this model year by adding the Jetta GLI sedan with a 90-horsepower powertrain from the Golf.
In 1993, Jetta began its third generation with another increase in length and more aerodynamic lines. By this point, VW only offered the Jetta with four doors and an upgraded suspension, as well as provided a new 115-horsepower engine. By the time that the Los Angeles Auto Show took place in 2005, Volkswagen was ready to show off the fifth-generation Jetta with its rounded lines and chrome front grille. New features included electronic stability control, brake assist, dual-zone climate control, and electro-mechanical power steering.
