2018 Volkswagen Atlas IIHS Safety Rating
There are many considerations when choosing the ideal model for your family. The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas easy gained attention for its comfortable third row and attractive array of standard and available features, but what about its safety ratings? These days automakers are held to a higher standard, and we think that’s a great thing. Recently, the 2018 VW Atlas was rated by the IIHS for crash tests. So how did it do?
2018 VW Atlas earns Top Safety Pick
We previously mentioned the NHTSA rating for the 2018 VW Atlas, which gave the model a 5-star overall rating. Naturally, we already had a good general idea about the safety of the model, but we consider the IIHS rating to be just a touch more comprehensive.
We’re happy to say that the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas received Good overall ratings for small overlap on both driver and passenger sides (one of the most damaging crashes and most difficult to earn a Good rating in), moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints/seats. Crash avoidance and mitigation also earned a Superior rating, which is measured on a six-point basis for optional driver assistance features. The Volkswagen Atlas earned five out of the six possible points. The last point that was not earned is for the high-speed auto brake test. This is a 25-mph test that measures how much speed reduction the system can perform. The Atlas was able to reduce in speed by 17 mph, but full points are earned for systems that can reduce 22+mph.
We know that nobody wants to think of what it would be like to get in an accident, but it’s nice to know that should the worst happen, you’ll remain as safe as possible.
